Blackwood V Caldicot

The first game of the season, and a day tinged with sadness as we marked the passing of Owen Parfitt who sadly passed away on the Monday 2nd September with a minute’s silence before the game. The silence was followed by a round of applause which was well deserved for our President, Chairman, Club Captain and player. Thank you, Owen, for all you done for Blackwood Rugby Football Club.

A good start to the season for the Wood with a 57 – 27 victory over Caldicot. The game seen thirteen tries scored, eight by Blackwood and five for Caldicot, with Blackwood converting seven of their tries with only one by Caldicot. The other points for Blackwood coming from a penalty.

Our try scorers were Simon Hughes, Tom Moss, Mathew Minty, Gary Wilkes, and two tries apiece for Josh Law & Nicky Tucker. Ross Turner converted seven of the tries and added one penalty

A competitive game, perfect conditions, a big thank you to Peter Lundy (Head Groundsman) and Jason Burton (Apprentice) for the Wembley surface and it did make for an entertaining running game. The first twenty minutes were Blackwood’s which saw us race into a twenty-four-point lead, but a competitive Caldicot side kept clawing back points with some excellent tries. The Wood kept stretching their lead and late in the game scored some excellent tries from deep in our own half which put the game out of reach for Caldicot.

Thank you Caldicot, looking forward to the return game and for a few pints in the bar afterwards, all the best for the rest of the season.
